This keeps the warm air from pooling at the top of the oven and cooking at a faster rate. This is why your pizza burns on top, but the middle is still cold in the regular oven! With the movement of the warm air, the food is allowed to cook more evenly and reducing the risk of burning or not being cooked in the middle.
